How do I know if I can benefit from coaching?

People who benefit most from a coaching relationship already have quite a bit, want to keep it, and want to do better so they can have a little bit more.  If this describes you, then coaching can probably help you -- if you're ready to try.

What exactly IS a coach?

A coach is a knowledgeable friend who understands what you want and takes the time to find out what keeps you from getting it.  A coach wants to know why you try so hard to get to where you want to be, then spots what trips you up or keeps you from getting there.   Best of all, a coach cares enough to say you're behaving like jerk (when you are), then helps you get past that.

Where can I find resources to make my business more successful?

First of all, recognize that you are the most important resource for your business success.  No one else will know more, do more, or care more about your business than you.  Next, identify and use other resources to help free up time and energy that you will need to develop successful business strategies.  Without coherent strategies, adding other resources often produces less than desired outcomes.

Coaching is designed to overcome this pitfall.  Successful implementation of sound ideas allows you to experience the success of getting more of the right things done right the first time -- and every time.  The coach is there to give you that little nudge, to keep you on track, always focused on success.

The four most important resources a coach brings to you are perspective, focus, encouragement, and accountability.  These are the personal resources you need to support and sustain the quality of effort that continually needs to be expended if you are to achieve your passion, mission, and vision -- all the activities and actions that you say matter to you.

Why do people need a coach?

The need for a coach depends on who you are, what you know, and what you can already do.  Most people in the business world, who want to do more, already know what to do.  So they don't have an IDEA shortage.  But many do have trouble with IMPLEMENTATION, getting ideas to actually pay off.  Almost everyone wants quick results, but when results don't come fast enough, people soon get distracted by all the other things they must do (although many will swear it won't ever happen to them).

A coach keeps your attention on things that matter most, keeps you doing what must be done to achieve your highest objectives in a reasonable amount of time.  This is why it helps to have a coach.  The coach has your best interests at heart and will not get distracted.

Who are the best candidates for coaching?

Business people who want more from their business usually get the most from coaching.  There are a many ways of expressing these higher expectations, but I like this one:

"The greatest measure of business success is the ability to make enough money and manage your operation well enough to be out a lot -- out living the life you dream about."
—Richard Paris Borough, Ph.D.

How well you control your time is one of two major marks of a successfully managed business life.  For example, can you take three or four days off per week, virtually any time you want, without your business or career faltering, stagnating, or suffering in any way?  Or be away two to three months a year and still have a business or career waiting when you get back?

If you can't do that yet, consider using a coach until you can.

What's the Number One thing a coach can do for me?

A coach gives you valid perspective, which is an on-going objective look at what you're doing from outside the inner loop in which you normally operate. Why is that important?  Because the coach's perspective is from someone whose eyes are fresh.  Most of all, the coach's viewpoint helps when you need someone to say, "Hey, wait a minute.  I think I can see a better way.  Why not try . . . ?"
